The Virgin Spring. A-

I saw Bergman's The Virgin Spring the other night and thought it was excellent. My main observations from watching it are that Bergman is a master at showing tragedy instead of telling it, that the tragedy was magnified by the purity of the girl, that the visual quality of the movie resembled the style of The White Ribbon, and that that shot of Max von Sydow pulling down a tree was a pretty fine example of the combination of grief and rage.
